UTCS is pleaseed to announce that Suman Jana, a current Ph.D. student working with Associate Professor Vitaly Shmatikov, is the recipient of a Google Ph.D. fellowship. Suman also received the Best Student Paper award at the 2012 IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy for the paper he wrote with Vitaly titled "Memento: Learning Secrets from Process Footprints."

"WebOS: Operating System Services for Wide Area Applications," a paper co-authored by Michael Dahlin has been selected as one of the top 20 papers in 20 years of publications from the HPDC, the International ACM Symposium on High-Performance Parallel and Distributed Computing. Co-authors of the paper, are Amin Vahdat, Tom Anderson, Eshwar Belani, David Culler, Paul Eastham, and Chad Yoshikawa.

The department hosted prospective Ph.D. students at GradFest 2012, a two-day exploration of UTCS research, resources, and community. Over 30 admitted students attended panel discussions, toured labs, and met with faculty one-on-one. Current graduate students hosted the out-of-towners in their own homes for a real look at life as a UTCS grad student.

At the Verified Software: Theories, Tools, Experiments (VSTTE) conference, held as part of the Symposium on Principles of Programming Languages (POPL) in Philadelphia, UTCS's very own ACL2 team was awarded one of the two Gold Medals in the 2012 VSTTE verification competition.

Professor Inderjit Dhillon and Assistant Professor Pradeep Ravikumar, together with their postdoc Ambuj Tewari, had remarkable success at The Neural Information Processing Systems (NIPS) Conference this year.
