UTCS alum Paul Taele has been awarded a National Science Foundation East Asia and Pacific Summer Institute (NSF EAPSI) fellowship for 2013. Paul will be carrying out research that focuses on enhancing creative computing tools for promoting better design thinking using sketch recognition techniques with Dr. Richard C. Davis at Singapore Management University in Singapore. Read More

In October 2012, University of Texas System Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa announced the decision of the UT System to participate in EdX, an online non-profit learning initiative founded by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The University of Texas was the first public school system to join the partnership, which previously consisted of Harvard, MIT, and UC Berkeley. Read More
Nell B. Dale, one of the first women to earn a doctorate in computer science, was named the 2013 recipient of the IEEE Computer Society Taylor L. Booth Award for her contributions to computer science education. Read More
Rathi Kannan, a Dean’s Scholars biology and computer science senior, isn’t afraid of a challenge. Actually she welcomes them. After wanting more out of her education, she added computer science as a second major. She has studied abroad in Spain and performed research here in the College of Natural Sciences. She is also serving on the Dean’s Scholars council as the elected Dean’s Scholars Chair. I chatted with Kannan to learn about her research, her leadership experiences and how her two degrees meld. The Bill & Melinda Gates Computer Science Complex and Dell Computer Science Hall (GDC) is the new center for computing at The University of Texas at Austin, and will further secure Austin and Texas as leaders in technology innovation. On March 6th we celebrated the GDC’s grand opening. Read More
Bill Gates—Co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation—visited The University of Texas campus to take part in the opening ceremonies of UT's new computer science building—The Bill & Melinda Gates Computer Science Complex and Dell Computer Science Hall, or GDC for short. At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, UT President Bill Powers thanked Gates and the Dell family. Michael and Susan Dell could not attend the ceremony, but Zachary Dell spoke on behalf of the whole Dell family. Read More
