Lecture & Scholarship Presentation Free and Open to Public
Austin, TX – Space Shuttle astronaut and University of Texas alumnus Bob Crippen will visit the school to present student Dustin Carlino with a $10,000 scholarship from the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF) during a public lecture and ceremony, Friday, Sept. 13, 2013 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Student Activity Center Auditorium.

UTCS Professor, Don Batory and CEO of RockYou, Lance Tokuda won the Most Influential Paper Award for their paper "Evolving Object-Oriented Designs with Refactorings," which they published at the ASE (Automated Software Engineering) Conference in 1999.

At the National Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), Ray Mooney delivered the keynote talk on language learning, and it was very well received. Peter Stone was selected to be one of the co-chairs of next year's conference.
Also, Peter Stone and his student, Daniel Urieli, won PowerTAC, the Trading Agent Competition on electricity markets.

Kristen Grauman has earned the 2013 Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (PAMI) Young Researcher Award. The award is given to a researcher within seven years of their Ph.D. Kristen received the award at this year's annual IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR). CVPR is considered, together with the International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV), the top level conference in computer vision.

Peter Stone has been selected for the 2013 Regents' Outstanding Teaching Award. The awards are given to faculty in the UT System " who have demonstrated extraordinary classroom performance and innovation in undergraduate instruction." This describes well Peter's contribution to education and mentorship. The award is given to faculty members who demonstrate extraordinary classroom performance and innovation at the undergraduate level.

UTCS Ph.D. student Yang Wang has earned a Google Ph.D. Fellowship in Distributed Computing. He is one of 39 Google Fellows who will bring their skills and talents to Google in pursuit of more innovations and ideas that the company can incorporate in the future.
Google has announced the recipients of its 2013 Ph.D. Fellowship program, which the search giant promotes as a way to gain new insights and innovations from some of the best minds in colleges and universities around the world.
