12/19/2012 - In less than a month, the fences will come down, the construction crews will pack up their equipment, and UT Computer Science will be handed the keys to its bright, shiny new home—The Bill and Melinda Gates Computer Science Complex and Dell Computer Science Hall. What a home it is! If you’ve been keeping up with this project, you’ve undoubtedly heard us brag about the state of the art research pods; the collaborative study spaces for our expanding student body; and the expanded opportunities for integrating our undergraduate with faculty research projects. 12/13/2012 - As The University of Texas at Austin has evolved into one of the nation’s leading names in computer science education, its rapid growth has left it struggling in one key area: it does not have the number of scholarships it needs to most effectively recruit the remarkable number of high-performing merit students that apply for admission each year. Students in the computer science honors program, Turing Scholars, are among the nation’s most talented, and many of them turn down offers from schools such as MIT, Stanford, and the University of Washington each year to attend UT Austin. 11/19/2012 - Mutual Mobile announced that Chief Technology Officer Mickey Ristroph has been honored by the 2012 Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) as Information Technologist and CTO of the Year. Ristroph was recognized at the 15th Annual IT Executives of the Year Awards at InnoTech Austin on November 8th. Under his leadership, Mutual Mobile has become a major player in the mobile industry, designing and developing award-winning iOS, Android, Windows 8 and web solutions for clients such as Audi, Cisco, Jaguar Land Rover and Google. 11/08/2012 - To a packed house of over 250 attendees, Craig Mundie, Chief Research and Strategy Officer at Microsoft, shared his insights on how technology is changing and how tomorrow’s technology will shape your world. As chief officer of the world's largest computer science research organization, Mr. Mundie was able to provide a unique glimpse into Microsoft’s technology focus while demonstrating some of Microsoft’s latest products and cutting edge tools. Following the presentation, Mr. Mundie opened the floor to questions and encouraged the audience to “come up and play with the toys.” Read more
10/30/2012 - Kathryn S. McKinley, UTCS professor, Emery Berger, UTCS 2002 Ph.D. graduate, and Benjamin Zorn, Microsoft researcher were recently awarded the Most Influential Paper from OOPSLA at the 2012 SPLASH Conference for "Reconsidering custom memory allocation."  The award is given annually to the author(s) of a paper presented 10 years earlier and judged to be the most influential over the preceding decade.  Berger is now an Associate Professor at UMass-Amherst.    Read more
08/08/2012 - Two of UTCS's current and past Ph.D. students have won significant awards. Siavash Mirarab, who works with Tandy Warnow on large scale phylogenetics, received a Predoctoral Fellowship, which provides three years of support, from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). Matt Taylor, who completed his Ph.D. in machine learning with Peter Stone in 2008, won an NSF CAREER Award to support his research on A Multiagent Teacher/Student Framework for Sequential Decision Making Tasks. Matt is currently an Assistant Professor at Lafayette College. Read more
06/15/2012 - Don Fussell, Calvin Lin, 2010 UTCS Ph.D. graduate Paul Navratil, and Hank Childs of University of California, Daviswon the Best Paper Award at the 12th Eurographics Symposium on Parallel Graphics and Visualization. Their paper is titled "Dynamic Scheduling for Large-Scale Distributed-Memory Ray Tracing." Read more
